The Living Room Space

A den is easy to describe. It's comfy, boasts multifunctional furnishings, and is commonly the most widely used place in the house. Having said that, it requires more than a big TV to create an environment that everybody can enjoy.

The family area renovation in Joshua and Grezelda Smith's home in New York is a wonderful illustration. Working with well known architect Chuck Peabody (who formed the main team of folding doors) and interior designer Janey Jimplin, the Smiths incorporated selected elements so the new space lives up to their particular demands. Now they have a multifunctional space which has a classic appeal. Join us, and find out how Chuck and Janey combined a number of essential factors to make the Smiths' most loved space.

Phase 1: Area Association
Chuck's design for the new addition joins the main living room from one side and the veranda from the other. "We needed to get to the outdoor patio easily," says Peabody. The move from new to old is simple and convenient. "Family who stop by have no idea this spot was a renovated addition."

Phase 2: Comfort and Durability With Beauty
Janey and her coworker Elizabeth Surfroot created a dual-function seating area. The footstool functions as a coffee table but has the convenience of a chair. There is plenty of space for the kids to hang out on the floor while gaming or watching tv. A basic wool rug masks dirt and resists wear and tear. Padded chairs offer the same role -- attractive durability. If the dark chenille gets ruined, it can most likely be repaired. The timelessness of the furnishings justifies the investment on well-built, good quality items.

Phase 3: Functional Storage Areas
Janey and Chuck ensured the Smiths had specific spots for their electronics. Practical builtin cabinets also add more architectural charm. The tv and Blu-ray player are stored on either side, while the other cabinet holds video games.

Phase 4: Light and Color Range
Sunlight plays a big role throughout this space due to the many windows. Olive surfaces and corresponding textiles fill the spot with warmth. Compact halogen illumination in the ceiling, as well as lights in three corners, create subdued task lighting.
